1. I’m better at knowing how to write a news feature article, how to ask questions, how to do interviews, and how to properly space out the paragraphs. The improvements for writing a news article is from a lot of practice and feedback from my professor. We did lots of assignments such as, “story pitch”, “feature article first draft”, and “genre and audience choice proposal”. I have learned most in feature article first draft because my professor gave a lot of useful feedback on my mistakes and how to make my writing better.
2. What most makes me proud is the special experience to do an interview with strangers that I don’t know. I even made friends while doing the interview and at first I thought it would be very hard and embarrassing for me to ask about their experiences. But it did turn out better than I thought. Also in class our professor has taught us a lot on how to ask questions that will keep ourinterviewers continuously talking instead of us just simply asking a question over another. I feel very proud because it was sometime that I never did before and I didn’t have the confidence to doa good job either, but I did make it.
3. I think what made everything going pretty well is because of our professor giving us clear instructions and also giving us enough time to do all of the work. So all of the assignments weren’t hard at all if you were paying attention and turning it in at times. Also a very good tool that I learned from this course is the “CCNY Library Database”. In this course we learned how todo research in different kinds of databases to find the source that we need. The variety of sources in those databases are much more than just searching from google, also more reliable. I have usedthe CCNY Library site to do research on my news feature article and find some incredible useful information to cite in my article.
4. Almost everything went pretty well, all of my professors are really nice and helpful. I think what is not that good is that I haven’t made many new friends and also my grammar needs to be improved more. I also feel a little unconfident when I see other classmates’ writing was a lot better than mine. That is mainly due to my language barrier, my vocabulary is limited since English was not my first language. That does make me feel unconfident and not fit in with others many times but I’m working on improving that, otherwise all were going pretty well this year andmy grades were all straight A’s.
5. The most insight that I gain is that you need to be prepared and have the ability to catch a chance when it comes. From one of our assignments, “Elevator Pitch”, I have learned and practiced how to introduce myself to a high level of boss in a very few minutes. This assignment might not seemvery necessary for now but I know that in the future it will be happening and if I have the confidence and prepared for it then I may get a job opportunity out of it. So confidence and preparement is absolutely a need for future after graduating, no matter what career or company I work in.
6. What I have learned is to reach out for help and ask for suggestions when you’re not really sure if you’re doing good or not. Also more important than that is to have a positive attitude toward all ofthe suggestions that are given no matter if they are good or bad. I noticed this importance when we were working on Weekly assignment IV “discussion on research and activism at CCNY”.The suggestions and feedback given from my peers were really helpful for me and I see how my workcan be improved so much from those different feedbacks. Suggestions from others, especially from professionals, would really help you to get straight to the point and help you improve.
7. The first person would definitely be myself. Others also helped such as my wife, parents, and alsomy professors, but it is pretty much all on me to take the suggestions and listen to the advice that’s been given to make the right choice. I share most of my nervousness with my wife, such as not knowing what major or which major would really fit me. She obviously doesn’t know the answer to my questions but she would give some really helpful advice on what kind of career thatI might fit due to my personality and that I can try to take classes related to that topic to see if I’minterested. Also I talked to my advisors about what classes to take for next semester and with the help of my advisor I had all of the classes enrolled before they were all full. I have feelings of growing in multiple ways but not sure which particular way is growing the most.
8. I think the person is the lack of self esteem that takes me to this point in the semester. It would be impossible to get all A’s in all of my classes without self esteem and I want to keep up with the work into next semester and every year after. I wasn’t really good at math but my professor did a lot of help and the “math tutoring” in our school has definitely taken most of the credit. I go tutoring every Monday and Wednesday, the teachers there were really kind, professional, and helpful. One of the teachers named Andy was really clear at explaining complex math problems. It actually felt fast that this semester is already about to finish and I’m already getting excited about the classes for next semester, also the winter break though.
9. I am very grateful for one of my assignments, the “linkedin profile”. I feel really grateful that our professor is putting that as an assignment, teaching us step by step how to set it up and add our information into the profile. That is a really great app for any of us to find a job in the future or now. This is one of the assignments that I felt pretty shocked when they introduced it, it felt so sweet that they are bringing everyone to know about this absolutely important app for every student from any country, since some of the immigrant students might not know about the app and they could miss lots of opportunities for a great job. So very grateful for our professor thinking about us and it really means a lot for our future.
10. I had a better understanding of the genre than in the beginning of the semester. In other words, I didn’t even know what a genre was before this class and our professor made it very clear to us. Also our professor did many examples of different genres and let us read many news articles before we actually start to write our own. Also he discussed lots of ideas and gave advice to each one of us on what kind of topic would be good for our article. He would go over with every singleone of us one by one which is very kind. After writing our first news article, our second major project is “two genres” and writing in a different format to show the same topic of our news feature article. This assignment has also bring me into a deeper notice about genres and how to write in different kinds of format.
11. I feel most happen when I see the grade of my midterms. It gave me a feeling that all of my work was worth it and encouraged me to keep up and do better. I believe that I can experience these moments a lot more frequently in the future if I keep up with self esteem. Also another very happy moment would be lunch time, since I usually go to lunch after my math tutor. Food makes me feel charged up for the next class and I also feel satisfied when eating after a while of brainstorming math. Those two moments were the happiest times this year in school, but outside of school there were even more such as spending time with my family, my dog, and spending holiday together with my wife.
12.I’m proud of myself when I did a good presentation and my professor also agrees with me. Standing in front of class to speak and present my idea wasn’t a really easy thing for me. So I do feel proud of myself whenever I do a presentation, no matter if I did it well or not. I was especially proud of myself in my business and financial project, the “AL’s Fast Charge” because I was getting the chance to present my idea to real investors. They liked my idea and I was getting the chance to go even further about my idea, not many people had this opportunity so I’m very grateful about it. Also I was proud of myself for taking the chance to get the extra credit, to present in front of class even though it was optional. I wasn’t really doing it all due to the extra credit, in another way I was wanting myself to get more used to presenting in front of others so I can do better with more practice. I don’t celebrate those kinds of things but I do feel happy when I get the approval from my professor.
13.My new project in my business class, CCNY database, and some different career information has made a positive difference for me this year. First, for my project it was given highly approval from my professor and he introduced me to some real investors to let me present to them. No matter if it works or not, but that did build up the trust of my idea and have confidence about it. For the CCNY database it was really helpful because now in my other classes while I’m doing research on anything I have a more reliable way to find those sources that I need. Also I have been talking to my advisor about different requirements for different careers. From discussing the requirements I have eliminated some majors that I think would not fit me and I think that education or psychology would be a better option for my future. Which is really important and helpful to know so I can be sure which way I’m working and what classes I should take to graduate.
1.I have learned how to write different genres and had a deeper understanding from all of the lessons. Before I didn’t know what genre it was but now I find it interesting and I want to try more different forms of writing. Medium would be depending on what kind of way to express our idea or topic. Different kinds of ways to tell our audience. Also I have learned how to target my audience from my “News Article Pitch” and “Analysis and Audience Profile”. Those two were really good assignments that helped me to have a deeper understanding in how to have a clear target audience.
2.My understanding was deeper on how to navigate different writing situations. I had new understanding mainly due to the assignment “Two Genre”, which is also our major 2 assignment. Writing about the same topic but in different kinds of format and writing situations has given me a deeper understanding in how a same topic can be expressed in different kinds of genre or medium. The feelings that it gives out are totally different and it may attract different groups of audience even if it was the same topic. I have really felt that through our last class, the “presentation on the two genres”. Some of my classmates have similar ideas and topics to mine but the way that they chose to perform was totally different and I felt it was very interesting to see one idea being performed in different kinds of ways.
3.My writing process was being brought up more effectively after this semester. I have other classes that I need to do writing for also but what I learned from this class has helped me to improve my writing in other classes that haven’t ended yet. From the assignment “Invention to The Max”, it has taught me how to plan out what I needed to do for the next following days to have a big project done. Before I didn’t know when to start or which part to focus on when I’m facing a very big project that takes a huge part in my grade. After that assignment I started to plan out all of my big projects a little day by day and it seemed a lot easier and less stressful.
4.Depending on what kind of genre and medium would have a direct affect on who my audience would be. Such as a more news article type of format would be attracting an audience that reads news articles often. If the writing were being put in the newspaper then our audience would be more elderly people than younger teenagers. So the way of showing your writing to the public actually does affect in a lot of ways who your targeted audience would be. The assignment, “Article Analysis Questions” has inspired me on how important the genre and medium can affect the audience you chose. The article for this assignment is a new feature article type and from that depends on the audience would mostly be people that are in adult ages such as 21-40.
5.After taking this class and what I learned from it I would have a much clearer idea about how to write a new genre. I also have learned how to access the “CCNY library database site”, which in the future I can use to find sources for my new writing. From a more reliable place to find my sources my writing would be better. Also I learned how to do APA citation, knowing how to cite properly is very important in any type of writing. Having the knowledge about how to find my audience due to genre and medium it would be much easier for me to write a new piece of writing than in the beginning of this semester when I know nothing and also have no idea where to do the research or what to research.
6.For the research process, before this class I just put the topic words into google and search from there. I don’t really focus on whether the source is coming from a reliable site, sometimes I even take from wikipedia. Google was pretty much all I used and even if I didn’t find the one that I’m really satisfied with I wouldn’t try to retype the main words to redo the research and see if I get anything different. That changed a lot after taking this class and learning how to do research on different databases. My choices were more wide and I also learned from this class that rewording the main word typed into the research bar and doing filters is really important and how it can give me different results. Doing filters was also a thing that I never did before either, since I’m not even sure if Google can do that.
7.From this class I have improved on my stances by telling others my ideas and to convince or educate them what I believe is important. In assignment, “Two genres” and “News feature Article” was really good practice for me to use different ways to tell others my position and having reliable sources to prove my positions. Also in the assignment, “Mid semester reflection” has led me to have an overview on myselves improvement and also what I need to work on more. Which is why I can have a better clear idea on how to stand my position so I can bring my idea and trust to everyone in my audience.
